Crispy Comics is a new mobile-only publishing company devoted to producing comic books, art books, and other content that revolves around sequential art and pop culture. Casey Lau and Jeff Kwan are long-time collaborators who had their paper-comic career come and go in 1998 with Oktomica Entertainment. The two then jumped into the web with flash animated comics and now here they go again with mobile comics. They already have dibs on brainwave comics if they are still alive.

The new publishing venture was founded in 2008, the day after we got our first 3G iPhone — we skipped the first version but were grooving on the iPod Touch, which already was an amazing godsend. Inspiration struck 11 1/2 minutes after we started playing with it! What if we could set it up so that comics could be downloaded onto this coolest of cool devices? We balanced the pros:

• No more driving out for miles to your local comic book shop
• No more having to wait for Wednesday
• No printing costs

with the cons:

• No paper floppies to bag and board
• No secondary market worth

After weighing and considering these core elements, we decided to go completely mobile — leaving not only the print world behind as a delivery method, but also the open web as well — and return to the way we used to read comics. Hit the easily accessible “convenience store”, grab a comic off the spinner rack, roll it up, stuff it in your back pocket, take it anywhere, and then allow for trading with friends. (We’ll get to that last idea later!)

Apple has really opened up the future of distribution. Amazon is doing the same with the Kindle. Other developers like Google and Palm are following Apple’s lead. While we’ll miss the smell of old paper and sending our copies of Youngblood #1 to CGC to grade to try to recoup some of the losses we suffered form all of those Image comics we bought in the early 90s, it really just comes down to a medium where we can get our ideas out to the widest number of people in the most immediate way possible. Whether you’re riding the bus, waiting for a friend, or out at a party where no one is really that interesting — you can pull out your mobile device and let us take you to a “dreamworld of magic”, or laughter, or numerous fart jokes. We hope to cover a wide variety of genres and themes that you would never see from the big publishers today. We’re talking romance comics, detective comics, sports comics, and even funny animals — yes there, we said it!

Crispy Comics is also an open publisher and we’re looking to bring not just the young creators of today, who have already grown up on the Internet, but classically trained comic creators as well and bring them to this new medium. Can you imagine an originally created comic for cellphones created and illustrated by Howard Chaykin? Let the awesome and amazing nature of that statement just sit there and percolate in your mind for a moment. (We’re not saying we have that in the works, we’re just saying…)

We’ll constantly revise this page as we grow and learn because we really are just tossing it out there and trying to see what works. It’ll be fun, painful, and probably ugly in some parts but we’re sure you won’t want to miss it for anything — especially when you can download it wherever you are.
